The didactic program complements clinical teaching, where faculty and residents participate actively.

Didactic learning also takes place outside of the weekly conference format. Daily "morning conference" include 30 minute presentations by residents each morning including review of a case and pertinent clinical pearls.

Residents are required to attend weekly Wednesday conferences and Trauma conference held once a month. Early in the residency, the attendings actively assist the resident in the preparation of his or her lectures. As the resident becomes more senior, he or she independently leads interactive conferences. There are extensive computer and audiovisual facilities to assist in designing slides and handouts.  And, of course, residents have use of all Columbia University resources.

Journal Club is held monthly and includes a highly innovative format.  Residents are provided with an EBM text, The Users' Guide to Medical Literature, and read articles relevant to both key EM clinical topics and EBM concepts.  By the end of their 3rd year, residents will have read the Users' Guide text 3 times and will have an extensive understanding of EBM.
