At the completion of thirty-six months of postgraduate training in emergency medicine, our goal is to graduate outstanding emergency physicians fully capable to:
- Resuscitate, stabilize, evaluate, and manage an undifferentiated population of acutely ill and injured patients of all ages who present to the Emergency Department on a 24-hour per day basis.
- Utilize appropriate emergency consultation.
- Understand the social issues and use of community resources involved in the care of patients in the Emergency Department including addiction, violence/abuse of all ages, and sexual assault.
- Understand the importance of follow-up and continuity of care and make appropriate referrals after completing the patient's emergency medical care.
- Understand the organization of pre-hospital care services.
- Appropriately manage pre-hospital care of the acutely ill and injured of all ages and participate in medical control of pre-hospital care via telemetry.
- Provide patient education for the prevention of illness and injury.
- Participate in and learn administrative and teaching skills in emergency medicine.
- Understand research methodologies and acquire skills in critically evaluating scientific and scholarly publications and presentations.
- Understand the functions of a poison control center and consultative management of overdoses.
- Understand the principles of ultrasonography in emergency medicine and utilize it as part of the daily practice.
- Utilize effective communication, team-building skills, and appreciation of diversity in the Emergency Department to enhance patient, staff, and personal satisfaction.
- Understand and manage stress effectively to maintain personal well being.
