Rotation: Adult Emergency Department
Location: Both sites
Faculty Liaison: Individual preceptors
Contact Persons: EM chief residents
Description
Among the responsibilities of the EM-3 resident are the following:
1. The EM-3 is informed for every notification that arrives in the ED and is expected to direct all resuscitations, under the supervision of the attending.
2. Every EKG that is done in the ED must be cleared by an EM-3 or an attending.
3. The EM-3 residents "run" the Red Team at both hospital sites, and in this way they function as mini-attendings. The Red Team consists of an EM-3 and either an EM-1 or EM-2 resident, and patients are independently assigned to this team by the charge nurse. The EM-3 plays the supervisory role for the junior residents in addition to managing their own patients. They are expected to do considerable teaching to other residents and medical students. An attending is available to supervise all cases.
4. Receive referral calls to the ED from private MDs.
Goals
Sharpening and integrating skills, focusing more on the overall flow of the ED, teaching when
appropriate, strengthening EM knowledge base, and learning administrative skills.
Schedule
Approximately 18 shifts, 8 hour shifts Mon-Fri, 12 hour shifts Sat-Sun
Rotation: Pediatric Emergency Department
Location: St. Luke's
Faculty Liason: Angela Tangredi
Contact Persons: EM chief residents
Description
The EM-3 sees patients independently and presents to a pediatric EM attending. The EM-3 is expected to direct all resuscitations and participate in the care of the sickest patients.
Goals
The EM-3 resident should feel very comfortable seeing pediatric patients by the end of this rotation and confident in their ability to do so. They should also have mastered the basic pediatric procedural skills, like venupuncture in infants, foley catheterization, and pediatric conscious sedation.
Schedule
These 12 hour shifts are interspersed throughout the Adult ED block rotation. Residents do about 2 pediatric ED shifts each block.
