ConferencesWeekly Conference Emergency medicine conferences are held weekly on Wednesdays from 7:30am-1pm at the St. Luke's site in the Muhlenberg Building Auditorium. The time is broken up between lectures, case presentations, curriculum discussion, etc. as discussed below. The teaching is highly interactive, making for a relaxed yet productive learning environment. Residents are relieved from their clinical duties as the administration staffs the ED with extra attendings and PAs during this time period. Residents are expected to attend at least 75% of the conferences. Excused absenses include illness, off-service/away rotation, and previously worked night shift. All conference schedules, as well as assigned reading, are posted on the New Innovations website, the residency management and organizational program. Chiefs' Rounds Every other week, the chiefs start conference with 3 interesting cases seen by residents in our ED over the previous weeks. They lead an interactive discussion on the case presentation, clinical course, and management of the patient and then deliver a brief presentation on the disease topic. Core Curriculum Every week at conference, an hour is devoted to the assigned reading, including both the text book and relevant journal articles, related to the core curriculum. Discussion is led by the residency directors and faculty in attendance and joined by all residents. Assigned questions are also reviewed here. Follow-up Case Conferences This is a responsibility of the EM-1 residents and is done once a year by each resident. Residents prepare a 1 hour Power Point presentation that consists of the initial case presentation of a patient, a discussion of a broad differential diagnosis, and the clinical course of the patient, followed by a discussion of the disease entity itself. Dr. Clark will provide guidance for these conferences. Morbitity and Mortality Conferences The EM-3 residents each give a presentation on a case or series of cases managed by that resident that had a poor outcome as a result of clinical error. Core Content Lecture In addition to the above M&M, the EM-3 residents each deliver presentation on a core topic of their choosing.
ICU Conference Once a month, the ICU attendings and fellows join us for an hour at our weekly conference to discuss critically ill patients initially managed in the ED who are ultimately admitted to the ICU. The ED resident who managed the case gives a brief presentation on the patients ED course. A roundtable discussion is then led in which the ICU course is elaborated and both sides offer input as to the patient's management and on the disease topic itself. Orthopedic Rounds The EM-2 resident on the orthopedics rotation prepares a 30 minute Power Point presentation including interesting fractures seen by that resident in the preceding week. There is a brief discussion about the relevant anatomy, mechanism of injury, radiographic identification, and ED management of each fracture. Each resident will do this at conference 2-3 times during their ortho rotation. Pediatrics The pediatric EM attendings give a series of lectures on core pediatric topics, including relevant case presentations. These are interspersed throughout the year. Grand Rounds Once a month, a guest speaker is brought to weekly conference to deliver a presentation on a topic relevant to emergency medicine. Miniconference Didactic learning also takes place outside the weekly conference format. Each morning shift at both sites starts with miniconference. On the shift schedule for each month, residents are assigned the responsibility of preparing a short presentation on the topic of their choosing to be delivered at the start of their 7am shift. Each resident will deliver 1-2 of these in an ED block. They are 15 minutes in duration, informal, and interactive. Trauma Conference This is a joint conference held by both the Emergency Medicine and Surgery Departments. It is held once a month on Friday morning at 7am. One to two interesting trauma patients are presented and discussed. An emergency medicine and surgery resident alternate monthly in delivering the presentation. |
