ConferencesWeekly Conference Emergency medicine conferences are held weekly on Wednesdays from 8:00am-1pm at the St. Luke's site in the Muhlenberg Building Auditorium. The time is broken up between lectures, case presentations, curriculum discussion, etc. as discussed below. The teaching is highly interactive, making for a relaxed yet productive learning environment. Residents are relieved from their clinical duties as the administration staffs the ED with extra attendings and PAs during this time period. All conference schedules, as well as assigned reading, are posted on the New Innovations website, the residency management and organizational program. Chiefs' Rounds In combination with the Program Directors' Rounds, the Chief Residents present interesting cases to the residents. These will feature mostly visual diagnostics incorporating key teaching points and clinical pearls for clinical emergency medicine. Core Curriculum Every week at conference, an hour is devoted to the assigned reading, including both the text book and relevant journal articles, related to the core curriculum. Our reading curriculum follows the Rosen's textbook. Over the course of the three year residency, the entire curriculum will be covered twice. This hour is led by the Chief Residents and also features one intern highlighting a key portion of the reading. Assigned questions are also reviewed here. Follow-up Case Conferences Scattered throughout the academic year, residents come prepared to conference to discuss cases from their follow-up logs. Images and actual details from the cases are reviewed for discussion. Morbitity and Mortality Conferences The EM-3 residents each give a presentation on a case or series of cases managed by that resident that had a poor outcome as a result of clinical error. In addition, Departmental M&M is held monthly led by the Chairman. This highlights the importance of the quality assurance program, identifies areas for improvement in patient care and allows for insightful discussion among faculty and residents about management issues. Senior Topic Lecture Each senior resident is responsible for a one hour lecture on their senior topic. This topic is self-selected topic that will hopefully lead to an area of expertise for the resident. The goal is to discuss general principles of the topic, but also to incorporate current literature and evidence based medicine on the management of the topic.
EM/ICU Conference Quarterly, we hold a joint EM/ICU conference. This is a collaborative effort between the two departments to discuss a case that presented interesting management issues in both the ED and ICU. The EM Chief Residents and Medicine Chief Residents coordinate this conference under the guidance of the residency leadership and ICU attendings. The discussion follows the course of the patient through the ED and ICU highlighting critical aspects of the management with further discussion on the disease entity itself.
Pediatrics In addition to lectures on pediatric topics given by the faculty, each month we have an hour of conference dedicated to pediatric case conferences. This follows along with the core curriculum of Pediatric EM to ensure that we cover all topics during residency. These are case-based small group breakout sessions focusing on key teaching points for the clinical scenario. Grand Rounds Once a month, a guest speaker is brought to weekly conference to deliver a presentation on a topic relevant to emergency medicine. Morning Report Didactic learning also takes place outside the weekly conference format. Each morning shift at both sites starts with morning report in which the senior resident prepares a short presentation on the topic of their choosing. Each EM-3 delivers 1-2 of these in an ED block. They are 30 minutes in duration, informal, and interactive. Trauma Conference This is a joint conference held by both the Emergency Medicine and Surgery Departments. It is held once a month on Friday morning at 7am. One to two interesting trauma patients are presented and discussed. An emergency medicine and surgery resident alternate monthly in delivering the presentation. |
