Journal Club meets once a month on Thursday nights from 8-10 pm.
There is a structured Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) curriculum, prepared and taught by David Newman, MD, Director of Clinical Research and Barbara Kilian, MD, Research and Education Fellow. The main emphasis is on understanding key EBM concepts which then allow residents to critically evaluate literature, both now and for the rest of their professional lives.
Articles are distributed in advance. At journal club, the first hour is spent reviewing the pertinent EBM topic, i.e. prognosis articles. Residents then spend 15 minutes performing a literature search online that answers a clinical question relevant to the EBM topic.
In the second hour, residents are given work-sheets to help approach the assigned articles in a systematic fashion and then are broken up into small groups to evaluate the articles using this tool. The whole group then comes together to share their assessment of each article. Lastly, a discussion is led in which the clinical implications of each article are discussed, with a particular emphasis on relevance to ED practice.
The following website contains past lectures, chosen articles, and the minutes for each meeting:
