Roosevelt Emergency Department

The Roosevelt Division Emergency Department treats more than 56,000 patients yearly, including 5,500 in its Fast Track and 2,000 in the psychiatric emergency department.

Located in Clinton on the West Side, Roosevelt serves the active business, commuter and tourist population of midtown Manhattan, residents of the West Side, the local theater community and the area's homeless and indigent patients. By virtue of its location, the Emergency Department staff cares for patients from four national television networks, Lincoln Center and many Broadway theaters. The Roosevelt Division is a receiving hospital for the finish line of the New York City Marathon, and our emergency medicine attending physicians and residents operate a medical tent on-site in Central Park during this annual fall event

Roosevelt Hospital has served the West Side community since 1877 and had evolved to respond to the changes in population growth as the city grew.  Recent decreases in the number of facilities delivering emergency care in this area have rapidly expanded the number of patients evaluated at both the Roosevelt and St. Luke's Hospitals.  Increases in volume over the past year have far exceeded national trends.  Impressively, despite this, changes in registration, diagnostic testing and digitized technology have consistently decreased door-to-doctor, door-to-discharge and door-to-admission times.   Roosevelt Hospital maintains its commitment to providing continuous high-quality care and has made plans to deal with this changing face of emergency care in New York city.

In Fall, 2008, a new Emergency Department facility will open to accommodate this current and forecasted increase in patient volume. The number of treatment space will double, further decreasing wait times and the need to divert patients to other hospitals. The space will be configured to increase the number of single-bed, private room accommodations facilitating care in the most dignified environment possible. In addition, a new waiting room will provide a pleasant environment for family members waiting for loved ones. A new state-of-the art Emergency Department CT-scan will decrease the time critically ill patients need to be out of the treatment areas and allow them to remain in closer proximity to the trained staff. Other areas of this new facility include a Women's Acute Care Suite, a Rapid Treatment Isolation Room, a Cardiac Evaluation and Care Unit, a HAZ-MAT Response Center and an EMS Operations Center.

Roosevelt Hospital has been a trusted source of medical care for Manhattan's West Side community for over 130 years and continues to redesign and evolve to accommodate the rapidly expanding population it serves.
