Treatment Center, located at 411 W.114th
St., is staffed by social workers and other staff who are experts in the field of trauma and victimization. The Center provides counseling, complementary and alternative therapy and legal advocacy for victims of rape, incest, domestic violence, sexual abuse, stalking, assault, robbery; services are also available to family members of crime victims. In addition to individual counseling, the therapists facilitate support groups for survivors of rape, domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse and other crimes. CVTC staff members assist clients in filing for Crime Victims Board compensation claims, and help clients to navigate the criminal justice and legal systems, and to access social services. CVTC staff is also engaged in training and community education at schools and with other institutions. The offices are home to a large research library. Services are free of charge and confidential.
Rape Crisis Advocates and Domestic Violence Advocates are trained through CVTC. They are on-call to both Emergency Departments to provide support for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.
The SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) Program provides NYS Department of Health-certified experts who are trained in medical, legal and forensic aspects of care of the sexual assault patient. Physicians, nurses, nurse midwives and physician assistants can be trained in this discipline. These examiners are on-call to the Emergency Department to provide comprehensive care to these patients within 60 minutes of arrival to the ED. They provide referrals for medical and mental health follow up.
