Location

St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center is located on Manhattan's West Side, close to the mix of cultural, educational and recreational opportunities offered by the nation's largest city. From the dazzle of Broadway and the music, opera and dance of Lincoln Center to the river views and running paths of Riverside Park and Central Park, the West Side offers endless possibilities for enrichment and enjoyment. For those who enjoy eating out, New York City offers some of the finest dining in the world, with access to small neighborhood eateries, countless ethnic restaurants and more extravagant fare.

The Roosevelt Division is located near the center of the city. Broadway theaters, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, The American Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden are a short distance away. A walk across Central Park leads to some of the country's leading art museums, including the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. Downtown are the clubs, restaurants, theaters, shops and galleries of Greenwich Village, SoHo and Tribeca, and the old-world atmosphere of Chinatown and Little Italy.

The Morningside Heights area, where the St. Luke's Division is located, is also home to Columbia University, Barnard College, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Riverside Church, Union Theological Seminary and the Manhattan School of Music.

 

Salary

Emergency Medicine residents at St. Luke's-Roosevelt receive a salary that is in the highest range in the country.  The EM-1 salary currently starts around $51,000 with a graduated increase in income over the next 3 years.

 

 

Housing

As a service to residents and other professional staff, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center maintains three apartment buildings conveniently located across the street from both the St. Luke's site on Manhattan's Upper West Side and the Roosevelt Division in midtown Manhattan. Studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments are offered, with housing guaranteed to all residents.  The residents generally have their choice among the three buildings.  The rent is subsidized and affordable.  This is certainly one of the most cherished perks the program has to offer.  The residents also appreciate the opportunity to reside in such close proximity to one another, and this living situation fosters a strong sense of community within the program.

 

 

Entertainment, Sports, and Cultural Opportunities

One of the most rewarding experiences involves our continued participation in the New York City Marathon.  St. Luke's-Roosevelt maintains and staffs the medical tent at the finish line of this international sporting event.  All residents have the opportunity to participate in the care and resuscitation of these elite runners, with subsequent exposure to a unique aspect of sports medicine and most significantly, heat-related/induced morbitity.

 

Educational Reimbursements
Residents are given $750 a year to spend on educational purposes, including text books, journal subscriptions, and medical equipment.  An additional $150 educational allowance is provided by the GME office. 

In addition, St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center fully reimburses residents for the cost of USMLE Step 3 if the test is taken and passed in the first 18 months of residency.


Professional memberships to ACEP, SAEM, and EMRA are paid for by the EM Dept., and journal subscriptions to the Annals of Emergency Medicine and Academic Emergency Medicine are provided, as well. 

Lastly, the hospital provides UpToDate and MD Consult access to all residents.

 

Transportation

The hospital provides transportation between the two sites, St. Luke's and Roosevelt.  A coach bus circulates every hour, running between the hours of 6 am and 12:00 am.  With this added convenience, there is little need for a car or even public transportation.

 

 

Parking

Parking spaces are available for housestaff who do not live in St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center housing. Rent and parking fees are paid by payroll deduction.

 

 

Vacation

Residents receive 4 weeks of paid vacation each year.

 

 

Insurance

Individual and family health insurance is offered, including vision care and dental coverage, In addition, residents are provided with accidental death and disability coverage.  

 

 

Work Hours

Emergency Department shifts are 12 hours for EM-1 and a mix of 9 and 12 hour shifts for the EM-2s and EM-3s.  All off-service rotations hours are in compliance with New York state and Residency Review committee guidelines.
